ESCHERICHIA COLI PLASMA, EQUINE ORIGIN

For use in horses only by a licensed veterinarian

The plasma contains no preservatives or additives. The donor used has been found free of hemolysins against 32 of the main antigens in blood groups A, C, D, K, P, Q, U and negative for agglutinins in blood groups Aa and Qa. Donor has also tested negative for EIA, EVA, dourine, piroplasmosis, brucellosis and glanders.

INDICATION: E-Coli (J-5) plasma can be administered to modulate the immune response to endotoxic shock associated with Gram-negative infections.

ADMINISTRATION: The plasma should be kept frozen until required. It should be thawed using only warm water and then warmed to body temperature. Administer by slow filtered intravenous infusion. Do not mix with anything or transfer to another container. The usual dosage in a foal is 1-2 liters and 2-4 liters in an adult. Complications are very infrequent but may include mild reactions such as tachypnea and trembling. If these symptoms become severe and include sweating and excessive shaking, it is advisable to slow the rate of administration or to stop and restart in 5-10 minutes. If the symptoms recur or persist, discontinue administration.

Equiplas J Caution

This product is frozen immediately after collection and is not pasteurized. The transmission of viral diseases is possible with the administration of any blood product, as is the development of serum sickness, but these are rare occurrences using plasma in equidae.
