Japanese encephalitis virus vaccine nakayama Pregnancy Warnings

Japanese encephalitis Nakayama (JE) vaccine has been assigned to pregnancy category C by the FDA. Animal studies have not been reported. There are no controlled data in human pregnancy. The theoretical risks of immunization may be outweighed by the risk of infection to the mother and fetus if the mother is traveling to an area where there is a high risk of acquiring JE infection. Infections acquired during the first or second trimester may cause uterine infections and miscarriages. Adverse neonatal outcomes have not been reported from infections acquired during the third trimester. JE vaccine should be given to a pregnant woman only if clearly needed. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend postponing travel to high-risk areas until after delivery, and postponing vaccination until the infant is 1 year old, if possible.

There are no data on the excretion of Japanese encephalitis vaccine into human milk. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) consider the administration of vaccines compatible with breast-feeding. However, it should be remembered that neonates are too young to be vaccinated and will not be protected against infection.
