What's the difference between Viekira Pak and Viekira XR?

Viekira Pak contains two separate tablets co-packaged, and Viekira XR is a single fixed-dose combination tablet. Viekira Pak and Viekira XR both contain the same four ingredient drugs for the treatment of adult patients with chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) genotype 1 infection.

  • Viekira Pak contains ombitasvir, paritaprevir, ritonavir tablets co-packaged with dasabuvir tablets
  • Viekira XR contains ombitasvir, paritaprevir, ritonavir and dasabuvir in an extended release tablet

In May 2018, the FDA announced the discontinuation of Viekira XR with an estimated product availability through until January 1, 2019. The product discontinuation was voluntary.

Viekira Pak is indicated for the treatment of adult patients with chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV)

  • genotype 1b without cirrhosis or with compensated cirrhosis
  • genotype 1a without cirrhosis or with compensated cirrhosis for use in combination with ribavirin
