What are the active ingredients in Qtern?
Qtern (dapagliflozin and saxagliptin) is a combination drug containing dapagliflozin and saxagliptin used for the treatment of type 2 diabetes.
- Dapagliflozin is a sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitor.
It works to reduce blood glucose levels by reducing the reabsorption of glucose from the blood and increasing glucose excretion via the urine. - Saxagliptin is a dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitor.
It works to reduce blood glucose levels by blocking the enzyme which destroys the incretin hormones in the gut. Incretins increase insulin production in the pancreas, and reduce the production of glucose in the liver.
Dapagliflozin and saxagliptin have a complementary mechanism of action to control blood sugar in type 2 diabetes.
Qtern is indicated as an adjunct to diet and exercise to improve glycemic control in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus.
Qtern tablets are available in two strengths:
- dapagliflozin 5 mg / saxagliptin 5 mg
- dapagliflozin 10 mg / saxagliptin 5 mg
Qtern tablets are taken orally, once daily in the morning with or without food.
