Scalp Contusion in Adults

A scalp contusion is a bruise on your scalp. There is bleeding under the scalp, but the skin is not broken. You may have swelling at the site of the bruise.
DISCHARGE INSTRUCTIONS:
Home care:
- Have someone stay with you for 24 to 48 hours after the injury. Give him the signs of serious injury listed below, such as a seizure or trouble moving. You will need immediate care if you develop signs of a serious injury.
- Apply ice to your bruise. Ice helps decrease swelling and pain. Ice may also help prevent tissue damage. Use an ice pack, or put crushed ice in a plastic bag. Cover it with a towel and place it on your bruise for 15 to 20 minutes every hour or as directed.
Follow up with your healthcare provider as directed:
Write down your questions so you remember to ask them during your visits.
Contact your healthcare provider if:
- You have a headache or neck pain that is getting worse.
- You are drowsy and confused.
- You have trouble staying balanced or walking.
- You are irritable for no reason.
- You have problems with your vision.
- You cannot stop vomiting.
Treatment options
The following list of medications are related to or used in the treatment of this condition.
Return to the emergency department or have someone call 911 if:
- You have a seizure.
- You cannot be awakened.
- You are not able to move part of your body.
- Your pupils are different sizes.
- You have blood or clear fluid coming out of your nose, ears, or mouth.
